George Spencer Designs is delighted to announce the return of Malabar, the celebrated fabric house renowned for its vibrant hand-woven cottons, linens, and silks. For over four decades, Malabar has stood as a symbol of colour, craftsmanship, and cultural storytelling.
Founded in 1986 by Peter Sterck, Malabar emerged from a love of India’s vivid textiles - its bold patterns, radiant hues, and the rich narratives woven into every cloth. At a time when such expressive design was rare in the UK, Malabar brought a new energy to British interiors. Expanding to the United States in 2002, the brand gained a loyal international following before Peter’s passing in 2019 led to its temporary absence from the UK market.
Now, in a fitting homecoming, Malabar returns to its British roots through George Spencer Designs.

Named after the Malabar region of India, where many of its fabrics are still carefully handwoven, the brand continues to champion traditional craftsmanship. Working with ethically managed cooperatives, Malabar ensures that each piece supports skilled artisans and the continuation of age-old weaving techniques.
Every fabric, crafted from the finest natural fibres, is designed with both beauty and endurance in mind. The result is a collection that reflects not only exquisite artistry but also a deep respect for people and planet.
Malabar’s return marks a new chapter for George Spencer Designs, one that celebrates the timeless connection between design, heritage, and sustainability.
