As part of Design Destination London 2026, we took guests on an exclusive visit to Gainsborough's historical mill. The excursion offered a rare insight into one of Britain’s most enduring and influential textile manufacturers, with the tour providing an immersive experience that combined craftsmanship, heritage and contemporary design thinking.
During the guided tour of the mill, guests observed the meticulous processes behind Gainsborough’s woven fabrics, gaining a deeper appreciation for the skill, innovation, and attention to detail that define the brand. The visit was complemented by access to the Gainsborough archive, where professional archivist Tara Hamilton Stubber gave attendees a fascinating insight into the extraordinary collection of historic designs, patterns, and textiles that illustrate the evolution of British interiors and decorative arts over centuries.

The experience encouraged discussion around heritage-led design, sustainability and the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship while embracing modern technologies. For many attendees, the archive visit proved to be a particular highlight, offering both inspiration and context for contemporary design practice.
The day concluded with a traditional British afternoon tea in the nearby medieval village of Lavenham, providing an opportunity for guests to reflect on the visit, exchange ideas, and connect with fellow members of the Design Destination London community in a convivial setting.
The Gainsborough Mill Tour stood out as a memorable and enriching element of the Design Destination London 2026 programme, reinforcing DDL’s commitment to curated experiences that celebrate excellence, history and innovation within the design industry.
Thank you to all that attended and contributed to the success of the event!
