On Tuesday 25 November, George Spencer Designs welcomed designers and creatives from MBDS into our showroom for a special Festive Trimmings Workshop. The event formed part of our ongoing series celebrating craft, sustainability and the people behind the design process.
The afternoon was led by Rachel Travell and Nicola Gething from the team at George Spencer Designs’ trimming mill in Derby, who brought their extensive technical knowledge and passion for traditional craftsmanship to the workshop. They began with a detailed demonstration of how a classic key tassel is constructed, explaining each stage, from winding and binding to finishing techniques. They also shared insights into the artistry that goes into producing our bespoke trimmings.

Following the demo, guests were invited to roll up their sleeves and create their own festive key tassel. Using a selection of recycled yarns, surplus fibres and repurposed offcuts from our mill, attendees experimented with colour, texture and proportion to craft truly one-of-a-kind pieces. The use of reclaimed materials not only encouraged creative play but also underscored our ongoing commitment to sustainability and responsible making practices.
The showroom buzzed with conversation, collaboration and the satisfying rhythm of hands at work. It was wonderful to see designers, who so often work digitally or conceptually, connect with the tactile, analogue side of craft.
We extend our thanks to the MBDS team for joining us with such enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity. Events like this remind us how meaningful it is to bring the design community together, and we look forward to hosting more workshops that celebrate craftsmanship, community and sustainably minded design.
